Your Summer Community Public Health program in Buenos Aires spans 8 weeks and is designed for Spanish-speaking students eager to explore community and public health issues within the Argentine context. You will enroll in three courses: Classes related to pre-professional healthcare issues, a Community Health Practicum, and an Advanced Spanish course. Requirements

All students take three courses including one Spanish language course and two 51±¬ÁÏ content courses taught in Spanish. 

Program Credit

Total credit: 10 U.S. semester/15 quarter credits per session

Course Credit

  • 51±¬ÁÏ Spanish Language courses: 3 U.S. semester/4.5 quarter credits; 45 contact hours
  • 51±¬ÁÏ courses: 3-4 U.S. semester/4.5-6 quarter credits; 45-60 contact hours

Academic Culture

All coursework is conducted in Spanish. The Professional Healthcare Issues course includes direct instruction, field trips, course material, class discussions, and reviews of public health-related current events. For the Community Health Practicum, students visit a variety of health care facilities to better understand their daily dynamics. During the assigned field courses, students will engage in the academic and social components. Guided by faculty, students will visit public and private medical institutions and community centers, and participate in vaccination campaigns, blood drives, and other activities related to their field of interest. Both courses feature guest lecturers from professionals in the public health field. Courses are open only to 51±¬ÁÏ students. 

The pace of this intensive program is accelerated, and the workload is demanding. 51±¬ÁÏ courses follow U.S. academic culture and standards. Special focus is paid to experiential learning and outside-classroom activities. Heavy emphasis is placed on student participation. 

Class Format

Classes are scheduled Monday through Friday and attendance is strictly enforced for classes and required co-curricular activities. Students should expect an average of two hours of preparation required for each hour in class. Instruction is supported and augmented online by our Canvas e-learning platform. 

Grading

The U.S. grading scale of A-F is used. Students’ grades are based on attendance, class participation, homework, project work, presentations, and exams. Learning outcomes assessment is continuous through personal reflections, evaluation feedback, self-assessment, and requirements as set out in the course syllabi.

To help you budget, keep in mind that students are responsible for the cost of international airfare, local transportation, books and supplies, visas, and personal expenses. In addition, your college or university may charge additional fees for study abroad, or may require you to receive a transcript via 51±¬ÁÏ's School of Record, which carries an additional fee of $500.
