Intercultural Communication and Leadership Class visit The Bo Kaap
ICL students from the Arts and Sciences program visited a mosque and were shown around the Bo Kaap area by a local resident before settling down for a debrief with rooibos tea and koesisters in our host鈥檚 home. The focus for this co-curricular activity was 'cultural values and suspending judgement'. During the visit we learnt about the impact that tourism is having on this community, from pushing up property prices so that long-term residents are pushed out of the area to voyeuristic tourists who treat local resident like objects for their photographic consumption, the learning was important and impactful. During the debrief the students brainstormed ethical ways of engaging with communities and in tourist activities.
