Your 51�� Semester Global Internship program in Tallinn lasts 12 weeks and features three key components: A full-time internship with an international organization (approximately 30 hours per week), an internship seminar, and the option to take a course online through 51��’s global academic partner, ASU. 51�� Tallinn offers diverse housing options to ensure you're comfortable in your home away from home. From homestays to student residence buildings, we will strive for your accommodation preferences to be met. Additionally, all housing options are located in neighborhoods with convenient access to public transportation, shops, cafés, and eateries.  

Standard Housing:  

��ǳ��ٲ��: Includes a single room with an Estonian and/or Russian-speaking homestay family to immerse you in the city’s language and culture. Homestays feature a kitchen, living room, and bathroom shared with a host family and are located under 40 minutes from universities and 51�� Tallinn.
Residence Hotel: Includes a private room with modern amenities. All rooms boast a small kitchen area, private bathroom, free Wi-Fi, bed sheets, blankets, towels, and a washing machine. The building also features common areas and event spaces. Travel times by public transport are around 30–35 minutes.
Shared Apartment: Includes a private bedroom in a fully furnished apartment shared with other students. Apartments feature a shared kitchen, bathroom, and living area. Students use self-service laundry facilities with other students/guests in the building. Located within walking distance of the city center, with universities accessible in about 25 minutes by public transport.

Select Housing (Additional Fee):

Modern Studio Apartment: Includes a private studio apartment near Tallinn University with a kitchen area, private bathroom, free Wi-Fi, TV, as well as bed sheets, blankets, towels, and access to a fitness club. Weekly cleaning is included. Students use self-service laundry facilities with other students/guests in the building. Located within 10-minute walking distance of the city center and Tallinn University.

A note: The default criterion to assign housing is first-come, first-served; however, other factors may also be considered. If we cannot accommodate your first housing choice, we'll let you know before you arrive. Non-standard housing options require an additional fee that can be found in the program Dates and Fees.

51�� Tallin: Study in Tallinn’s city center at Tallinn University, 51��’s partner institution, just a 10-minute tram ride from the historic Old Town and within walking distance of Kadriorg Park, Estonia’s largest urban park, as well as the harbor and key cultural landmarks. 51�� Tallinn offers a modern learning environment with a library, study areas, and student lounges.

Arizona State University (ASU): Brought to you by 51�� in partnership with ASU, enhance your international coursework with optional online classes that align with your degree requirements. ASU offers thousands of online courses in asynchronous 7.5-week sessions that fit within the 51�� academic calendar.

Students are responsible for having their own course approval conversations with their advisors. Your study abroad advisor and 51�� staff can help you understand your course options if you don't see a recommendation that fits your course needs.

Requirements

All Global Semester Internship participants take the 9-credit full-time internship with the required embedded internship seminar, plus an optional ASU online course (ASU session A in spring, and ASU session B in fall) for a total of 9-13 semester credits.

Academic Culture

51�� courses are designed to follow U.S. academic culture and standards. The integrated academic course, which correlates with the 12-week internship, is taught primarily in-person or hybrid to complement the internship experience. Students are expected to dress and behave professionally throughout their internship and are subject to the agreed-upon internship protocols arranged by 51�� and the host organization.

ASU Courses: You may find yourself in classes with students from ASU, other American universities, and students from around the world. Some are earning their degrees entirely online, while others, like you, are supplementing their education with an online course. You’ll receive direct and individualized support from faculty, 100% online. Most ASU online courses are asynchronous, meaning there are no set log-in times, but make sure to verify this before the add/drop deadline in case you want to make a change.

Class Format

Students participate in a 12-week full-time in-person internship and required academic course taught in a hybrid learning environment, featuring both in-person class sessions and online asynchronous work designed to help students develop professional and intercultural competencies to complement their internship experience.

ASU online courses meet in “sessions” that are 7.5 weeks long in the semester, and all work must be completed within the session dates regardless of when your other 51�� courses begin or end. You’ll need a standard PC or Mac desktop or laptop computer with a download speed higher than 25 Mbps, as well as access to email, productivity software like Microsoft Office and other applications needed to perform a variety of educational functions. Most course materials you will need are available online. Since you are working mostly or entirely asynchronously, you’re given deadlines for your assignments by your instructor or in your syllabus, but you can work at your own pace within these due dates. Most instructors suggest a recommended pace to optimize your learning, but you have the flexibility to complete your ASU courses while pursuing your studies at your 51�� location.

Grading

The U.S. grading scale of A-F is used. Students are graded on the basis of in-class and online engagement, preparation, and specific assessments (such as project work, presentations, examinations, etc).

ASU grading follows the same format and standards as ASU courses taught in-person. As a U.S. institution of higher education, the grading practices should be familiar to any 51�� student. ASU awards grades of "A+," "A," "A-," "B+," " B," "B-," "C+," "C," "D," or "E.” “Pass/fail” or “Audit” is not allowed for 51�� students. Please see the 51�� Academic Manual for Students for more information about your grades.
