Academic Culture

Edinburgh Napier University classes are typically scheduled Monday through Thursday, but some may also be taught on Fridays. Students should expect to have daily homework assignments and quizzes.

Students will be assigned to a school based on the courses selected, therefore at least two courses out of the three preferred and alternative courses must be from the same school. Schools are located between three different campuses, so when selecting courses from different schools, students must be aware that they may be required to commute between campuses to attend classes.

Classes at 51 are typically scheduled Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Students are expected to complete two to three hours of independent work for every hour in class. Most courses combine lectures with local field trips and excursions to help students gain a better understanding of the local culture.

Arizona State University: Most ASU online courses are asynchronous. You may find yourself in classes with students from ASU, other American universities, and students from around the world. You’ll receive direct and individualized support from faculty, 100% online.

Class Format

Classes include seminars, lectures, and sometimes labs. They will require students to do independent work outside of class.

ASU online courses meet in “sessions” that are 7.5-weeks long in the semester, and all work must be completed within the session dates regardless of when your other 51 courses begin or end.

Grading

Assessment varies by course and department. Class attendance is mandatory, and participation is part of student assessment. Students should expect to complete all assignments and exams as scheduled. Students are graded on midterm and final examinations, papers, presentations, class participation, and attendance. Numerical grades are given on a 10-point scale, which 51 converts to recommended U.S. letter grade equivalents.

ASU grading follows the same format and standards as ASU courses taught in-person. “Pass/fail” or “Audit” is not allowed for 51 students.
